Enterovirus 71 (EV71) is a virus that proliferates in the gastrointestinal tract and causes mild as well as severe complications in humans such as hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD). Symptoms are highly dependent on the affected person's age with younger patients suffering more severe complications.
EV71 symptoms include fever, weakness, loss of appetite, encephalitis, meningitis as well as heart related complications.
The world's first vaccine against EV71 was licensed in China. It is an inactivated vaccine that is capable of long term protection. The vaccine is given in two doses with 30 days gap in between. Currently, vaccination is considered the best way to deal with EV71 since there is no known cure for it.
EV71 can be cultured in-vitro through propagation in Vero cell lines. VacciXcell's tidemotion bioreactor is the best truly linearly scalable bioreactor currently available in the market for culturing adherent cells, including Vero cells. Using this technology, it is easier to scale up and achieve production scale for vaccine production.
